I think it might just be the fact that few people have actually read the book or its sequels xD or they just veer completely away from the source material- there was a French adaptation last year with Eva Green as Milady. I feel like Mask of Zorro would be a better comp where the comedic elements don't overpower the drama. That the sequel has not been adapted- which features a failed attempt to rescue Charles II from his execution- just boggles my mind.

This might be a bit better: $95m budget against $94m domestic. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0120746/

I'd forgotten about Mask of Zorro...at least Antonio Banderas got to "reprise" the role with Puss in Boots. I think MoZ probably wasn't a big enough hit, at least domestically, to justify a sequel. If you assume the marketing budget probably took the total spend to $100m, $93m domestic isn't great. https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Mask-of-Zorro-The

But it did get a sequel: The Legend of Zorro! But it was such a letdown after the first film that I pretend it doesn't exist

😆🤣 I need to catch up on my Zorro knowledge.

The Three Musketeers. I still don't get how studios haven't turned this into a money-making franchise- there's so much material in the sequels to cover at least 6 films. And because it takes place over 20 years, it can be made like the Before trilogy, every few years or so at leisure.

That's a good thought. It's certainly been adapted countless times, but I can't think of single one that's really stuck. Do you think it's because the tone can be tough to capture for some? It's an action/adventure with a comedic element, but a lot of the adaptations seem to take the material quite seriously. It needs something in the way of Pirates of the Caribbean or maybe even A Knight's Tale. Something that tonally falls in between Robinhood: Men in Tights and Robinhood: Prince of Thieves.
